Photography Hours: How Many are Needed?

I get this question all the time, “How many photography hours will we need for the day”.

PhotographyHours: Allot time for getting ready shots.

The “Must Haves”

There are a few questions you should ask yourself to determine how many photography hours you will need.  First, start with the obvious…”How many total hours will the wedding and reception be?”  Next, “What exactly do I want photography coverage of?”  And lastly, “How much coverage do I want?”

If your wedding is going to be 6 hours from the start of ceremony to the end of the reception, then you know that you at least need six hours of photography coverage.  If you want other things covered such as getting ready photos, special intimate shots, or after party photos of everyone dancing, then you need to allow for more time.

Getting ready photos can take anywhere from 30min. to an hour for both the gents and the ladies, with more emphasis usually on the ladies.  A lot of memorable candid moments are captured during this time that is sometimes overlooked by couples.

Special intimate shots of the bride and groom without the wedding party can take up to 30min.  This is a great time to get some awesome photographs at a predetermined location at the venue that has a great background and beautiful lighting.

After Party photos of everyone dancing can last 30 min. to an hour.  Who doesn’t like great photos of their wedding party dancing and having a joyous time?  Looking back on these photos can give you smiles or laughter:-) for years to come!

Time to take into account

In summary, you need to think of what extra photos you would like to have and add some of the sample times from above to determine how many photography hours you will need.  You may have other things not listed on this post that you need to allot time for as well.  Apply these times to most everything else you can think of.  Typically, if all of these usaual “must have” shots are wanted, then you should add a couple of extra hours.  So for a 6hr. wedding, plan on booking for 8hrs. of coverage.
